A 38-year-old housemaid faced charges in the Court of First Instance on Sunday for allegedly practising witchcraft and sorcery.
The Indonesian maid allegedly took photos of the family members in the house where she worked and "practised witchcraft on them".
The woman's employer, a Jordanian businessman, 28, said the maid's "sorcery" came to light when they found out that a pair of gold earrings was missing.
"It was about 9pm on October 19 last year. My sister suspected it was the maid because she had stolen from us before and apologised, vowing to never do it again."
However, when the employer's sister asked the maid about the earrings, the latter denied having seen it.
But a search of the maid's closet revealed otherwise. "My sister found the earrings and other stuff we thought were lost."
The complainant and his sister also found three personal photos of their mother and her two grandsons torn , "with pins in it, next to which were symbols and strange writings". "When we asked her what it was, the maid gave no answer. So we called the police and reported the matter."
The defendant reportedly later admitted to the police that she stole from her employer and also confessed to the policewomen that she practised sorcery.
A female police lieutenant quoted the maid as admitting to having kept the children's photos and putting pins on it "so that they would love her". A verdict is expected on January 31.- mary@khaleejtimes.com
