Organised by Hoffmann-La Roche, under the patronage of the Ministry of Health as part of World Heart Day celebrations, an attendance of 1,000 people is expected at the Walkathon, Rima Khadra, Product Manager, Hoffmann-La Roche told Khaleej Times.

With obesity figures on the rise in the region, the Walkathon is designed to raise awareness on this disease and how to combat it with healthy lifestyle habits such as simple exercise in the form of walking. The event will also raise money for local charitable institutions such as Dubai Autism Centre and Future Centre.

Addressing the Press yesterday, Ms Khadra said that participants can walk the given course - a 5km route in Abu Dhabi and a 4-km route in Dubai - at their own pace." This year, the Ministry of Health is supporting the event in a bid to raise community awareness on obesity and related diseases, she added. "As this year has been dedicated to the woman, the walkathon will focus attention on creating awareness among women on the issues of obesity and the need for exercise," said Ms Khadra. Participants can also have their Body Mass Index (BMI) measured by the XeniCare Support Programme team and have their blood sugar tested free of charge by Roche Diagnostics, she said.

"At the Walkathon, we will educate people on health issues such as obesity, diabetes and high blood pressure," said Dr A Madani, Head of Dubai Hospital and President of Diabetes Society.

"Walking is one of the easiest, most convienient and most beneficial forms of exercise possible for anyone, of any age, to take up. Sedentary lifestyles have led to increased cases of cardiovascular disease, making it vitally important for us to encourage people to take up some form of exercise, such as walking," said Dr Wael Mahmeed, Consultant Cardiologist, Ministry of Health. Also present on the occasion were Raphael Kandalaft, Marketing Manager, Hoffmann-La Roche and Dr Yusuf Ali, Consultant Cardiologist, Dubai Hospital.

The Walkathon will begin in Abu Dhabi at Marina Mall and in Dubai on the Creekside by the British Consulate. Free registration will commence at 8.00am on both locations. The Walkathon is supported by Dubai Municipality, Department of Health and Medical Services, Emirates Cardiac Society, Diabetes Society and Abu Dhabi Municpality.
