Five members of a gang that targeted and robbed warehouses, were each sentenced to one year in jail on Tuesday after the court convicted them of break-in robbery of electric cables worth Dh42,294 in one case.

The five Pakistanis, most of them unemployed, were also accused of damaging private property. They were accused of using sharp tools to break the locks of the warehouses.
The Court of First Instance ordered them to be deported after completing their jail term. The legal consultant of the company that owns the warehouse said that some staff alerted him about the theft at around 4:30pm on March 10.

"I heard one of the several warehouses belonging to our company was burglarised. The locks were broken," the consultant said. "A quantity of cables was stolen". The staff called Bur Dubai police soon after they discovered the robbery in the morning. "During the same time, we also learnt about several similar warehouse burglaries reported in the same area. We set up a task force to investigate those crimes," a police lieutenant said.

The police also learnt that the main accused (a 25-year-old vendor) was involved in the reported incidents of robbery. He was arrested on March 29. The accused confessed that he robbed several warehouses with the help of few other men.
"When the others were apprehended they confessed that the money seized from them was earned by selling the stolen items," the officer added.
They led the police to the warehouses they targeted including the one from where they stole the electrical cables worth Dh42,294.

According to the Criminal Evidence report, the sharp tools used to break- open the warehouses were found in the main defendant's car.
The gang members (all between 25 and 30 years of age) confessed to the police and to the public prosecution investigation that they committed the robbery.
The conviction may be appealed.
