A gang of three Arab men was busted by the Abu Dhabi Police for their bid to sell antique objects they smuggled into the country.
Brigadier Dr Rashid Bursheed, Director of the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of Abu Dhabi Police, said that the smugglers were placed under surveillance when it was unfolded that they possessed antiquities including manuscripts, daggers, gems and ancient coins they tried to sell.
The trio was arrested from a hotel in Abu Dhabi, and the antiquities were seized by the CID officers. When the suspects were interrogated for marketing, promoting and selling valuable antiques in an illegal way, one of them confessed that some more pieces were kept with another person, who was later arrested and interrogated
He handed over the antiques kept in his possession to the police.
Antiquities are human heritage the entire world strives to maintain and protect from smuggling and tampering by smugglers, Brig. Bursheed pointed out, referring to international laws that safeguard and protect monuments.
