With the cooler months settling in, most of us opt to go out of the city to experience the great outdoors which in translation means driving out into the desert! The UAE is rife with beautiful sights and routes that are just waiting to be explored and experienced by YOU. So block your weekend calendars because we round up four of the best places to go desert driving here in the UAE.

Shawka Dam, Ras Al Khaimah

Just outside Ras Al Khaimah, Shawkah Dam offers not only scenic views, but also lush greens and wadi pools. The dam structure is well preserved and maintained so people can walk along the dam or even go down to soft patches of sand, weather permitting. Shawkah Dam is also welcome for mountain bikers, astronomers, photographers, and happy campers. The Dam has several off-road trails and rock formations if you fancy challenging your 4x4. Be aware however that the area quickly floods when it rains so check the weather conditions before setting off.

Coast-to-coast: Dubai to Kalba, Sharjah

Kalba Creek is the area of interest here; an important nature reserve, the mangrove is a key breeding ground for rare species of birds such as the white-collared kingfisher and Sykes' warbler. In 2012, Sharjah has closed off access to the creek to prevent further damage but one can still see several birds with the use a good pair of binoculars. Another highlight of the drive is the journey which requires 4x4s to go through a twisty mountain road near Hatta before finally landing back onto the beautiful Sharjah-Kalba Road.

Fossil Rock, Sharjah

A destination that is perfect of experts and newcomers to desert driving, Fossil Rock offers an exhilarating driving experience with just the right amount of challenge and ease. On the way to the rock, there are plenty of chances to spot camels roaming about. Fossil Rock and the nearby Camel Rock is also a great place to go on a picnic.

Liwa Oasis, Abu Dhabi

The greatest of all desert drives, driving for Liwa requires careful planning since the length of the drive to reach it is quite demanding. One must also schedule a few days for exploring the vast expanse of this area full of several points of interests such as farms, pools, and even abandoned vehicles! A single trip to Liwa will never be enough, that's why most people opt to visit it every once in a while because of the vastness of the playground given to 4x4s.
