Rains, which had been evading Dubai in the past few weeks even as other emirates saw heavy showers, finally lashed the city on Wednesday. Jumeirah recorded the second highest rainfall of the day at 11.6mm. Overcast conditions prevailed throughout the day, with the skies opening up frequently, accompanied by thunder and lightning.
A top official from the National Centre of Meteorology told Khaleej Times that seven cloud-seeding missions were carried out on the day. The country has been receiving a boost of around "10-20 per cent" rainfall because of cloud seeding, the official said.
However, with the rain came traffic jams, with gridlocks reported on three major UAE highways: Sheikh Zayed Road, Sheikh Mohamed Bin Zayed Road and Emirates Road.
Abu Dhabi's Ras Ghanada received the highest amount of rainfall at 12mm.
The country has been receiving rain since the last six months, with last month's average rainfall of 9mm higher than the 5.6mm recorded in February 2018.
