Traveller tries to smuggle fake currency with food at Dubai Airport

Dubai - The 26-year-old, from Nigeria and holder of a visit visa, allegedly hid the counterfeit money inside a bag full with food.

A woman allegedly tried to smuggle 50 fake bills, each worth $100 for circulation in Dubai, the Court of First Instance was told.

The 26-year-old, from Nigeria and holder of a visit visa, allegedly hid the counterfeit money inside a bag full with food. However she was caught by customs inspectors before she could exit the Dubai International Airport.
She was charged with possession of fake money for circulation.

"I was on duty on July 20 at the baggage inspection area when the defendant's bag raised my suspicions. I told other inspectors at another point to keep track of the traveller after she claimed her baggage, so to search it," the 27-year-old customs officer said.

Another inspector said he was informed that a bag was suspected of containing some banned material. "I kept an eye on the woman until she claimed her bag. I told another female officer to search the traveler's bag. She found a white powder in one bag and an envelope containing a large amount of US dollars. The traveller admitted the cash was hers," the 26-year-old inspector told the prosecutor.
The traveller was then referred to the investigation section.
The Criminal Evidence Department's report showed the bills, seized from the traveler, were all fake.
A verdict is expected on November 28.
