Two men, who tried to swindle a businessman, have been charged with attempted fraud in the Court of First Instance recently.
The suspects from Cameron - aged 33 and 39 - gave a false impression to the businessman that they possessed money which they wanted to invest with him.
The African duo who was arrested in Al Muraqqabat on March 22 also face charges of possessing fake $427,000 notes intended for circulation.
"We were tipped off about the accused who were swindling people by offering them large quantities of money, which they claimed could be used if washed with a substance," a police lieutenant said during the investigation.
After the police verified the authenticity of the tip, they coordinated with the informant to arrange to meet the defendants.
"We caught them red-handed trying to swindle him. They offered him $100 bills, tainted with a black substance, which they claimed needed a chemical material to become usable."
The pair was transferred to the General Directorate of Criminal Evidence where they admitted to the fraud bid charge.
"They confessed that they were to charge the informant for the chemical substance and the fees of shipment of the amounts of money from Cameron," the officer testified.
The Criminal Evidence report showed that the $100 bills seized from the accused were all counterfeit.
