UAE among top producers of dates

ABU DHABI - With an estimated 40.7 million date palm planted in the country, the United Arab Emirates is rapidly becoming one of the world's largest producers of dates, accounting for around 6 per cent of total global production.

The annual harvest has risen from around 6,000 metric tonnes in 1961 to an estimated 318,000 metric tonnes in 2001, with the land planted with the date palm having risen over the same period from less than 600 hectares to 62,000 hectares, according to a report in the UAE Yearbook 2003 recently released by the Ministry of Information and Culture.
