The comprehensive national campaign will be rolled out starting on Saturday on World Diabetes Day and will seek active involvement of health institutions, corporate entities as well sports organisations and clubs.

Like last year, the city will also light up in blue to highlight the importance of the day.

According to senior health officials, diabetes is causing serious physical and financial repercussions on the society. The current ministry spending on the disease is Dh374 million per year, they said. This is the reason why the ministry has dedicated the year 2009-2010 to combat diabetes and in this regard the National Committee to Combat Diabetes has developed this comprehensive outreach programme, said the Minister of Health Dr Hanif Hassan.

“Diabetes is a major cause of morbidity and mortality in our society and according to national statistics the incidence of diabetes reached 19.6 per cent in 2005 and this percentage is expected to rise to more than 28 per cent by 2025 if we do not take effective preventive action to curb this epidemic,” said the minister.

The minister also said about a third of hospital patients were suffering from diabetes or related complications such as cardiovascular diseases, kidney failure, blindness and amputations. “The burden of this disease falls on individuals, family and society. Based on these statistics, the UAE is ranked as the second country after Nauru in the world with high incidences of diabetes,” he added. Dr Mahmoud Fikri, Chief Executive Officer of Health Policy in the ministry and President of the National Committee to Combat Diabetes said the national campaign is of major significance especially since the country is undergoing significant economic transformation. “A combined effort is required to curb the disease that is having serious repercussions,” he added.

“Diabetes has become a disease that affects economic development in countries around the world,” he added.

He said the campaign primarily aims to guide health institutions and urge them to effectively play their role by increasing levels of knowledge and skills required of employees. As part of the campaign, the committee will implement a number of health projects including hosting of the World Conference on Diabetes. The conference will be held annually for five consecutive years in the UAE and the first conference will be held in March 2010. The ministry will also organise on November 24 a programme to educating school students, caregivers, teachers, healthcare providers and parents. Besides, 60 nurses will also be given training by international educationists starting tomorrow.
