A scrapyard in Sharjah’s Industrial Area 6 was gutted in a massive fire this afternoon, a top official of the emirate’s civil defence department confirmed. Though no injuries were reported, the entire yard and everything inside it were completely destroyed.
The blaze was reported around 12.30pm today, February 15. With thick black smoke billowing out and seen even at a distance, residents and motorists in the area initially panicked.
Firefighters from Samnan, Muwailih, and Al Mina stations were immediately dispatched, reaching the site in six minutes. The Sharjah Police patrols cordoned off roads, and workers’ accommodations close to the site were evacuated to prevent potential suffocation.
The fire was put out by 1.13pm. Investigations are now under way to determine the cause of the incident.
Civil defence authorities urged establishments in industrial areas to strictly observe fire safety regulations and ensure all materials are properly stored.
