UAE police warns against use of guns, other weapons

The police have stressed that weapons are being used by individuals despite awareness campaigns against their use, be they cold weapons like swords, axes, knives and bows, and arms, licensed or not.
This came after an Emirati woman was shot several times by her husband in their house in Ras Al Khaimah late on Saturday. The woman in her forties, however escaped death, and her condition remains stable.
Major-General Ali Abdullah bin Alwan Al Nuaimi, Commander-in-Chief of the RAK Police, said the Central Operations Room, alerted of the incident late on Saturday, dispatched an ambulance and paramedics to the house. "Initial investigations show that the suspect shot his wife several times apparently following a heated argument."

People-speak Ahmed Al Ammash, former FNC member, said random use of weapons can destabilise the security of the community and spread hatred among tribes and families. "There should be more stringent laws to prevent any unlicensed use of white weapons or arms." Ali Rashid, an Emirati, said keeping or using unlicensed arms, particularly by young people, is strictly prohibited. "Any such tradition is dangerous." Mohammed Salem, another Emirati said all the bodies concerned, along with tribes and families have to develop awareness about the risks of such weapons and arms. "The origin of some of these weapons is unknown."

The victim was rushed to the nearest hospital and her health condition is stable," he added.
"The man, also in his forties, handed himself in to the police immediately after shooting his wife."
Maj-Gen Nuaimi pointed out that investigations are on to identify the reasons behind the act. "The husband has not revealed his motives for shooting his wife."
Lt-Col Abdullah Al Mazrouie, manager of community police, told Khaleej Times on Sunday that several campaigns have been launched by the police to develop public awareness against the misuse of weapons, be they cold weapons like swords, axes, knives and bows or arms, licensed or not.
"We mainly concentrated on wedding ceremonies where people have unintentionally been killed and injured due to illegal use of weapons."
Cold weapons have also been used in hand-to-hand combat in violation of law, he added. "We started awareness campaigns four years ago, and do the same on an annual basis to alert the public about the such dangerous items."
