geneva -The UAE has welcomed the marked progress made by the Human Rights Council (HRC) in record time, especially on the Universal Periodic Review and its 55 Special Procedures.
At a high-level panel discussion held on Thursday to mark HRC's 10th anniversary, Obaid Salem Al Zaabi, UAE's Permanent Representative to the UN and other International Organisations, made this observation. He lauded the HRC's stand on a number of causes such as Palestine, Syria, Libya and the Muslim Rohingya in Myanmar.
Al Zaabi also noted some flaws in HRC's work, such as ignoring the council's inter-governmental character, and called on the Special Procedures to uphold their Code of Conduct. He expressed hope that the HRC would be able to overcome the procedural matters that hinder its progress and inhibit its performance due to double standards, politicisation and selectiveness. - Wam
