A driver was arrested in Dubai for speeding through the Sheikh Mohammed Bin Zayed Road (E311) at 220kmph, the police said on Friday.
The motorist was also fined Dh50,000 as the vehicle was impounded, the Dubai Police said.
A video shared by the police shows a car's dashboard, with the speedometer clearly indicating that the vehicle was moving at a speed of 220kmph. Here's the clip:
The footage appears to have been taken from the driver's seat — and if he/she was found to have been using a mobile phone while on the wheel, it would be another serious violation punishable by hefty penalties.
The case has been referred to the Public Prosecution for further legal proceedings.
Cracking down on irresponsible drivers, the Dubai Police have been on the lookout for those who deliberately break traffic rules — even posting their stunts online. Several violators have already been apprehended based on videos that went viral on social media. There were those filmed while drifting their cars in the rain, and one who drove an SUV on two wheels.
Speeding, in particular, is a serious traffic offence in the UAE, punishable by fines of up to Dh3,000. If a vehicle has been impounded due to reckless driving, the owner will also have to pay a penalty of Dh50,000.
