As thousands of children started going to school today, Sheikha Fatima bint Mubarak, Chairwoman of the General Women's Union, Supreme Chairwoman of the Family Development Foundation and President of the Supreme Council for Motherhood and Childhood, conveyed her greetings to students, teachers as well as parents in a statement.

Sheikha Fatima welcomed the announcement made by the Ministry of Education (MoE) and the Abu Dhabi Education Council (Adec) regarding the unification of the education system at a state level. "This marks an extraordinary beginning for the 2017-2018 academic year, under the guidance of the MoE and Adec, as part of their efforts to promote the 'Emirati School Model.'"
She called on teachers and educators to be role models for their students, and to make every effort to keep pace with new approaches and reforms taken to ensure the development of the nation's educational systems that seek to benefit children and young people. "Teachers have a great responsibility to educate and influence our youth. Educator's efforts to expand and encourage our youth's education and help develop their moral and altruistic behaviours are always appreciated."

Here's an extra-special way to start the new school year: Over 10,850 boys and girls from grades one to 12 from five national charity schools in Dubai, Sharjah and Ajman have received school bags and essential supplies from Dubai Cares' 'Volunteer Emirates' programme on Saturday.
Around 350 volunteers participated in the sixth edition of Volunteer Emirates, sponsored by Emirates National Oil Company (ENOC) and held at Horizon English School.
Each of the school bags packed by the volunteers included a pencil case, notebooks, sketchbook, pencils, blue pens, crayons, stickers, sharpeners, erasers, glue, felt tip pens, rulers and a geometry set. The packs were handed over to the national charity schools to carry out their distribution.
"A new school year represents a new chapter in the story of so many children, and we hope that the essential school supplies provided to thousands of children through this latest edition of Volunteer Emirates will help ensure that their story is one of learning, development, enjoyment and achievement," Dubai Cares CEO Tariq Al Gurg said.
She added: "I thank once again members of the UAE community who continue to demonstrate their compassion, social awareness, and innate sense of contribution and service. I would also like to thank ENOC for their support and for illustrating their true belief in the power of education and their trust in Dubai Cares."
For his part, ENOC Group CEP Saif Humaid Al Falasi said in a statement: "CSR is deeply rooted in our organisation's ethos and this initiative has been introduced as a way for us to contribute to the happiness and wellbeing of our future generations. At ENOC, we continuously aspire to forge and maintain partnerships that promote education, while enabling our nation's young minds."
Dr Kamal Farhat, general manager of the national charity schools, added: "Providing a true quality education requires many things, and the infrastructure, resources, and equipment that enable learning, curiosity, and growth are among them.

Some tips, suggestions for motorists, students
> Typically, there's a lot traffic around schools especially in the mornings and early afternoons. Be extra alert and careful when you are driving close to schools
> Watch out for extra traffic guidance and follow directions of the school staff, traffic guides or police
> Drivers dropping or collecting kids must not obstruct traffic
> Be considerate to other motorists, just like you would want to receive consideration!
> Park your vehicle safely and even a few steps away from the school - walking a few extra steps is good exercise for you and the kids
> Be extra careful when you ARE around a school bus
> Obey the yellow warning sign and flashing red lights engaged by school buses when they stop to allow students to get on or off
> You must stop to allow safe passage for students
> Watch your speed and be ready to brake anytime
> On the roads, be polite and give way to school buses; do no cut in front of them and show a caring attitude for the kids
> Pick-Up/Drop-Off: When approaching the pick-up / drop off points, cross the roads safely. Never run to or from the bus, just walk normally
> Outside the bus: Don't stand in the danger zone (Note: if a child can touch the bus, he or she is too close!)
> Take your seat promptly, buckle up and sit properly, facing forward at all times
> Always keep your head, hands and arms inside the bus. Remain in the seat until the bus comes to a complete stop
> Listen and obey: Always listen to the bus driver's and attendants' directions
