Since the 'Smart' gate service was rolled out in November last year at Sharjah International Airport, passengers have been able to complete passport control procedure within 20 seconds, said Ali Salem Al Midfa, Chairman of Sharjah Airport Authority.

He was launching an awareness campaign to encourage people to use the 16 'Smart' gates at the Sharjah airport.

The 'Smart' gates have helped speed up the procedures, cut waiting time and eased congestion.

"These gates have reduced the passenger rush during peak hours, ensuring a smooth travel experience. The facility is part of the airport's strategy which focuses on making travel easier for all passengers by providing the best internationally recognized services," said Al Midfa.

Addressing mediapersons on Sunday, Al Midfa said the 'Smart' gate service should be utilized to reduce the queues at passport control counters. There are eight 'Smart' gates each at the departure and arrival points.

Passengers can register with their passport to use the service. They are welcome to register at immigration centers and at the registration office at departure and arrival after going through the eye scan, he said.

"If you do not have a machine-readable passport or are travelling with children under 7 years old, you can use the standard passport counters," Al Midfa said.

The awareness campaign, which will run until the end of July, aims to provide travellers with the required information to register and use the 'Smart' gates. It is aimed at highlighting the importance of the facility for passengers in saving time and enjoying a new travel experience.

The 'Smart' gates were installed in collaboration with the General Directorate of Residency and Foreigners Affairs in Sharjah.

Al Midfa added that the 'Smart' gates use a highly efficient, quick and accurate system that read and scan passport information, capturing biometric data using a high-accuracy camera and comparing the information given, with the passenger details saved in the system.

THIS IS HOW YOU CAN USE THE 'SMART' GATE

  • Scan your passport's personal details' page; the 'Smart' gate will open.
  • Enter the 'Smart' gate and stand on the marked footprints.
  • Stand still and look at the camera. Do not move until the word 'ok' is displayed on the screen.
  • Exit when the gate opens and proceed to baggage reclaim.
