A massive fire broke out in Umm Al Quwain's Umm Al Thaub industrial area on Saturday night. The central operations room of the UAQ Police, after having been alerted of the blaze, dispatched traffic police, ambulances, paramedics and rescue teams to the site in record time.
Official sources in the UAQ Civil Defence department told Khaleej Times that the fire erupted in a petrochemical factory around 7pm. Firefighters put out the fire as well as concluding cooling operations at the site. Major General Jassim Al Mazrouqi, Director General of the UAQ Civil Defence, was present at the site of the fire to supervise the operation - given the extent of the major fire.
The flames spread through the entire warehouse, and huge financial damages are expected, they added. "The warehouse was totally destroyed in the blaze," sources said, "however, none was hurt in the incident." An investigation has been initiated to identify the reasons behind the fire, they added.
"The case has been referred to the legal authorities concerned for action." A few days back, a four-wheel-drive car was gutted in a house fire in UAQ's Salma residential area.
Earlier this July, a heavy truck was totally gutted in fire on the Emirates road. Two cars were also destroyed in a fire in Old Umm Al Quwain on June 26.
