Rumours on social media that consuming Vimto causes cancer were denied by the Food Control Section at Dubai Municipality.
The department confirmed that all food products are subjected to laboratory tests and careful inspection before being registered under the municipality's electronic system.
The system allows continuous tracking of food products, confirming their sources, manufacturer and distributor. Khalid Mohammed Sharif Al Awadhi, Food Control Department director, confirmed that no official warnings about the drink have been issued.
He warned against listening to rumours, which are usually spread by unknown sources. Incoherent language, lack of clear scientific evidence and misspelled words are signs of a spam, he added.
Al Awadhi noted that the municipality had previously denied rumours around the drink, which circulate especially before Ramadan. He added that additives in the drink are within approved standards set by local, regional and international bodies related to food safety.
Imported products are subject to a tight regulatory system that includes field inspection and sample gathering before being released to the market. Al Awadhi stressed that Vimto was of no exception, and was found safe after several inspections.
He added that the UAE works within a notification system in the GCC where detections of harmful substances are reported regionally.
