As the 22nd edition of the Carpet and Art Oasis opened, residents can enjoy a series of hand-woven wonders at the 90 stalls set at the Dubai World Trade Centre.
Around 45 companies are participating in the event organised by the Dubai Customs, to showcase the range of rugs, hand-woven mats, hand-made floor coverings and much more. The show will go on until January 15.
Amir Ghanbarinia, MD of Heritage Carpet, thinks the UAE is a luxurious market and this exhibition gives a good chance to clients to absorb and check the biggest collection of carpets in Dubai. "The woolen silk carpet with pure gold worth Dh1.6 million was the biggest hit last year. We sold six pieces of that carpet and this year also we have very unusual stuff to launch and we have three surprises that we will reveal in the coming days," he said.
Mostly, the high-end pieces are manufactured in different cities of Iran. Countries like India, Afghanistan, Pakistan and China also manufacture varieties of carpets and floor coverings in different designs and sizes. The price range of the home décor product starts from Dh500 per square metre and goes up to millions.
Mohamed Hadi, purchasing manager at Al Shareif Carpets, said: "We have two special silk carpets that we will bring in the next few days and each is worth Dh3,00,000."
Saiful Islam, sales executive at Persian Carpets & Antiques, said: "We have extraordinarily beautiful hand-woven carpets from Iran and it takes 4-5 years, lots of efforts and patience to weave a single piece of striking big carpet. Some special designs which are quite popular are Qum, Tabriz and Kashan. We managed to sell more than 100 carpets last year and have more expectations this year."
Hassan Jabbari, one of the oldest participants in the exhibition, has witnessed the growth and popularity of the biggest carpet show in Dubai. "We started in 1996 and the exhibition rocked Dubai till 2002. It became little slow after that and picked up again in the year 2011."
