A European woman who performed plastic surgeries at home without a licence has been arrested in Dubai. A joint operation by the Dubai Police and Dubai Health Authority (DHA) helped nab the suspect who promoted her cosmetic offerings via social media platforms.
Col Omar Mohammad bin Hammad, deputy director of anti-economic crimes department, said the authorities had been monitoring the suspect for a while. "A joint team from the commercial fraud and anti-hacking section at the Dubai Police and the DHA managed to arrest the suspect red-handed with help from an undercover female officer.
"The officer had called the suspect pretending to be a customer. She sought appointment for a cosmetic injection. As the suspect started getting things ready for the 'treatment', the police unit raided the flat and arrested her red-handed. The police confiscated medical equipment and other items from the flat. The team also seized bills proving the purchase of substances and materials used in cosmetic treatments such as Botox, fillers, and more," added Col Bin Hammad.
Brigadier Jamal Salem Al Jallaf, director of the criminal investigation department (CID), said the woman relied on the experience she had in her country. "She was promoting her services through her Instagram account to book appointments and receive patients discreetly at her apartment."
He said the suspect exploited the closure of plastic surgery hospitals and clinics in the country amid the Covid-19 pandemic in order to receive patients in her flat.
The officer urged social media users to stay aware and ensure the validity and veracity of online advertisements. "Community members should always seek medical services of authorised medical outlets and professionals licensed by the authorities," Brig Al Jallaf said.
