An Indian man stood trial at the Sharjah Shariah Court for allegedly beating a compatriot friend to death under the influence of alcohol. He is also accused of stealing Dh300 from the pocket of the deceased.
According to court records, the Sharjah Police were informed in October 2015 about an injured worker lying in a pool of blood near a labour accommodation in Al Sajja area. The police rushed to the site and moved the man to a hospital, where he was declared brought dead.
During investigation, the police suspected the accused as he was the last person seen with the victim. He was detained and interrogated by the police, during which he confessed to the crime. Later, he was referred to the Sharjah Public Prosecution, charged with murder.
He admitted beating the victim five times with a stick after during a brawl. However, at the court, he told judge Husain Al Ousofi that he didn't want to kill the victim, but he was defending himself after the victim started beating him.
He also told the court that he didn't remember the details of the dispute or the fight as he was under the influence of alcohol. When he saw his friend had fallen unconscious during the fight, he carried the injured man and placed him on a piece of wood near their labour accommodation before fleeing the place. Later, he was arrested from a friend's place, where he was hiding.
The accused repeated his confessions regarding the theft, murder and drinking alcohol in the court.
The case has been adjourned to hear the witnesses.
