While normal working hours have been reduced for the holy month of Ramadan for both public and private sectors, workers in some professions may be required to work for additional hours.

Anyone who works additional hours is entitled to receive extra payment for the overtime, the Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation (MOHRE) announced on Monday.

The ministry said workers can put in up to two extra working hours during Ramadan.

Here is how to calculate your overtime payment during Ramadan:

If you work for two extra hours before 9pm, you are entitled to get an additional 25 per cent added to your normal wage as overtime. For example, if you are earning Dh100 per hour, then the amount should be increased to Dh125 per hour for the extra hours worked.

If you work for two extra hours between 9pm and 4am, then you are entitled to an additional 50 per cent added to your normal wage as overtime. For example, if you earn Dh100 per hour, then the amount should be increased to Dh150 per hour.

Public sector employees have a five-hour working day during Ramadan, while private sector have had their working hours reduced by two hours.
