Today I read a quote by famous American author, inventor and politician Benjamin Franklin which said: 'The best of all medicines are resting and fasting'. It was such a great find for me as I had a double shift at work and was struggling a bit with my fast. For the first time, I had a bit of a headache, for the first time, I felt very thirsty as I worked outdoors in the heat. And for the first time, I was unable to pray on time and was 30 minutes late. I have been very particular about praying on time and it did upset me coupled with the fact that I was tired, thirsty and exhausted.
Since most of the times, I stay in the comfort of the air-conditioners, the real feeling of being thirsty and hungry hadn't really bothered me until today. I realised that what I felt today is something many people in the world go through every day. My heart went out to all those who struggle to make ends meet. Food, water, shelter and safety are such basic needs which we all just take for granted. By feeling thirsty and hungry out in the heat, I realised the value of a clean glass of water. I realised the value of food as my energy levels dipped. Those less fortunate have to put up with such difficult situations all their lives. And I thanked Allah for making me go through this because I learnt to appreciate what I have and count my blessings Alhamdulillah.
It also gave me a valuable message that the real joy of enjoying God's bounties lies in moderation and restraint and not by overindulgence.
Also, another important aspect that I was reminded of was charity which does not necessarily have to be in terms of money but can be in the form of favour, advice or a simple smile. And then I read this: 'If you tell about your almsgiving it is OK, but if you hide and give it to the poor, then it is better for you and it will atone for some of your ill-deeds. Allah is informed of what you do.'
Everything seemed to be falling in place. I feel God shows me signs through my own life and gives me a new reason to love my religion and my faith in Him.
I learned how to develop my willpower, concentration and resolve which are powerful qualities that help us stay stable throughout our lives.
I see fasting and training oneself of denying desires and forcing to stay hungry and thirsty in obedience of God. This is a way of testing and measuring our faith in God. I want to prove my mettle to my Lord, I want to be his favourite one and, hence, I will fast with a renewed resolve to endure, to restrain to give and do good.
