World leaders joined hands on Monday in the Capital to address challenges and achievements in sustainable development, on the first day of the 10th edition of the World Future Energy Summit.
President Filip Vujanovic of Montenegro, discussed the rising climate issues the world currently faces and the confrontations, which need to be tackled, in order to achieve a safe and clean energy for the future generations to come.
He pointed out that, "clean energy must be our priority", and "renewable energy is key."
Vujanovic highlighted the importance for leaders to stand by the world's first comprehensive climate agreement, the 'Paris Agreement,' which aims to reduce global warming. The agreement, which was negotiated by 195 countries and went into effect on November 4, deals particularly with greenhouse gases emissions. Vujanovic praised the UAE for its vision as a nation with multiple projects for sustainable development. "We should take the UAE as an example," he added.
David Sandalow, Inaugural Fellow at the Centre on Global Energy Policy from Colombia University, urged leaders to take climate change seriously, highlighting that, "2016 was the warmest year on record", thus the world is heading towards dangerous times.
"But it is also the best of times when we see that prices of renewable energy have dropped. Here in the UAE, we have seen remarkably low prices for solar power."
