A 25-year-old Emirati allegedly attacked two policemen as they tried to arrest him for possessing drug pills, a Dubai court heard on Wednesday.
The defendant stood trial in the Court of First Instance for selling narcotics to a police informant. The defendant has been charged with possessing drugs for trafficking.
The defendant is accused of possessing 100 tramadol pills for sale. He is also accused of possessing 25 pills of another type of narcotics for personal use. He attacked two officers from the Anti-Narcotics Division of the Dubai Police as they tried to arrest him. The incident happened on March 13.
A police major said the police received information that the accused possessed a quantity of tramadol pills and would sell it to a police informant for Dh2,500.
"We had a prosecution warrant issued for arrest and search. Around 11.45pm on March 13, I went with other officers to a petrol station in Al Twar where we met our informant to give him money to buy the drug pills," the major told the prosecutor.
The accused arrived in his car and drove around the petrol station for some time. He was being very careful, the officer said.
The accused then got inside the informant's car. A few minutes later, the informant signalled to the officers that he had been sold the drug pills.
"When we raided the car and told the defendant we were police officers, he resisted strongly. He tried to flee. Two police corporals were injured."
The police officers recovered the money used in purchasing the drugs from the defendant. The police informant handed over the bottle containing the drug pills to the police.
A medical report showed that two officers sustained minor injuries. The court adjourned the hearing to October 12.
