Heavy fog was witnessed over Dubai on Tuesday morning, and during its debut appearance this season, it caused 289 road accidents.

From 3am till noon, the fog caused chaos on the emirate’s roads, but fortunately, air traffic was left little affected.

According to a statement issued by Dubai International Airport: “Disruptions and delays due to fog at Dubai International this morning were minimal, with only two flights diverted to Oman and Ras Al Khaimah airports. Both flights have now returned to Dubai and operations are running normally.”

The reported road accidents ranged between minor, moderate and critical, with the operations rooms of several of the emirate’s police stations logging 2,200 phone calls.

Director of the Command and Control Centre Brigadier Omer Abdul-Aziz Al Shamsi, called upon motorists to exercise caution while at the wheel. He explained that the country is currently affected by unstable weather.

According to NCMS, the marginally unstable weather will continue till Thursday. While the forecast for today says cloud formations will be seen in internal and coastal areas, Thursday will be a more humid day, partly dusty with fog only in the eastern areas. Relative humidity is expected to rise this evening and continue to tomorrow morning. Temperatures during the next two days are expected to rise minimally — by a degree or two, but no rain is expected.

Brigadier Al Shamsi advised drivers to check the weather reports before setting out. He said drivers ought to ensure that the windshield and side windows on their vehicles are clean, and that the head and tail lamps, as well as the side indicator lamps function properly. “Motorists must leave an adequate safety distance from vehicles moving ahead, and slow down so that they can apply brakes, if necessary.”
