The UAE may receive "freezing rain or snow" over some of its mountain peaks on Sunday, January 12. Yes, you read that right! According to the five-day forecast issued by the National Centre of Meterology (NCM), the weather intensity will weaken by today, but there is a chance of rainfall over northern and eastern areas.
And along with that, some snow is also forecast.
The NCM forecast a significant drop in temperatures "and a probability of some freezing rain or snow over the mountain peaks".
Rainfall is expected till Wednesday, with the relative humidity set to increase by Monday morning over internal areas.
Snow has previously been reported in the country. In February 2017, the temperature had dipped to a freezing -2.2°C on the UAE's highest peak, Jebel Jais, and videos of snow on the mountain had gone viral.
Last year in March, residents in Umm Al Quwain woke up to hail-covered streets with some early risers capturing ice pellets falling and pummelling their cars and roofs.
Images of snowmen made of hail - adorned with a red-chequered shemagh - flooded news feeds as the Umm Al Quwain hashtag in Arabic became a trending topic on social media.
