Waterfalls gushed off mountains, vehicles waded through water-clogged streets and lightning flashed through dark clouds as heavy rains lashed six emirates on Wednesday. Temperatures dipped to lows of 17°C amid peak summer, as the Met office predicted more rains throughout the week.
Scenes from Rafisa Dam in Khor Fakkan looked straight out of postcards from cooler parts of the world, with clouds descending on the hills around its lake:
Check out these gorgeous waterfalls gushing off mountains in Fujairah as seen in a video posted by weather-related social media handle Storm Centre:
The lush greenery around the dam came alive with the rains:
A video shared by the NCM shows dark clouds in the east coast beam with lightning and thunder:
However, the heavy rains also left some streets water-clogged. This is Fujairah:
Authorities are working around the clock to drain water from the affected streets. A video posted by Sharjah News showed operations in full swing in Kalba:
A drive-through Covid-19 testing centre in Fujairah had to be closed due to the prevailing weather conditions. The Fujairah Police posted a notice on Twitter, announcing its temporary closure.
The NCM had predicted “unstable weather” for Wednesday, with rainy conditions bringing down temperatures significantly. The authority advised residents to stay away from areas that are prone to flash floods and water accumulation.
Wednesday saw heavy to moderate rains in Dubai’s Jebel Ali; Umm Al Quwain’s Falaj Al Mualla; Sharjah’s Al Dhaid, Khor Fakkan and Kalba; and parts of Abu Dhabi, Fujairah and Ras Al Khaimah.
Cloudy conditions with chances of rainfall in some areas are forecast for the next four days.
An NCM official had earlier explained to Khaleej Times that rains have been more frequent and heavier in the UAE this summer. Summer rains are not uncommon as the country experiences monsoon low pressure from India. The emirates could see up to three days of rainfall a week during summer, the official had said.
