There's no doubt by now that Eid this year will be a #StayHome affair. UAE residents are urged to prioritise safety - both their own as well as that of the public - during their celebrations in order to prevent the spread of Covid-19. That doesn't mean it has to be subdued affair though. Here are some fun ways to maintain the spirit of the season - even if you're spending it indoors.
Design Eid cards with the kids
Encourage the younger ones to get creative and design greeting cards for other members of the family. Not only is it an opportunity for them to tap into their artistic side, it's a great way for them to get into the festive spirit. You can even put up a little string or twine across one wall in the living room or hallway, where all the cards can be hung and displayed.
Invite guests to virtual feasts
A big part of Eid celebrations has to do with visiting homes of friends and families and dining in fellowship together. UAE authorities have discouraged such gatherings this year, but that doesn't mean all is lost. Mealtimes are a big affair during Eid; so, go ahead and prepare that feast - and make sure to share it online with other loved ones. Technology has been making this possible for iftars this year; no reason to stop now!
Dress up
One of the best-loved aspects of Eid celebrations is the chance to crack out one's best outfits. You haven't been out in a while and those PJs are slowly morphing into second skin. Why not take the opportunity to dress up for those aforementioned virtual feasts? Retailers like Splash, Carolina Herrera and American Vintage are all set with modest wear collections. Even kids can take their pick from Net-A-Porter's Eid collection for little ones.
Enjoy small screen offerings
Netflix will be streaming much-loved comedy plays for Eid, including El Eyal Kebret, Al Motzawgoon, and Bye Bye London. OSN, meanwhile, will be showcasing a collection of over 30 classic Adel Imam movies, including Al Bahth an Fadiha, Al Halfout and Al Irhabi. Over at ZEE5, a special curation for Eid has been planned for May 24. This will include a list of hit movies, shows, tunes, originals, cooking recipes and a list of popular hits of the Khans of Bollywood including Josh, Raja Hindustani, Hum Aapke Hai Kauna and more. Additionally, the platform will stream Arabic-dubbed versions of popular blockbuster films Double Dhamaal, Padman, Qarib Qarib Single and more. In other words, consider yourself utterly spoilt for choice!
Give, then give some more
You may not be able to exchange presents in person, but you can still make loved ones smile by sending gifts their way - and the city's retailers are all ready to make this happen. Try Pierre Marcolini's customised luxury chocolate hampers or Sugargram's bite-sized Eid delights (both available on Deliveroo). If you're shopping for women, you can't go wrong with the new Namshi x MAC exclusive beauty set or an Eid hamper from Sephora. Alternatively, the Eid Box from Tania's Teahouse, or Eid gift sets from Bath & Body Works or Aura would make great presents for all.
