What has been your most challenging experience to date and how did you resolve it?
I come from a family of lawyers. No one that I knew was a jeweller. I had to build a name for myself from scratch at a time when most people bought jewellery from their family jewellers alone. But slowly and steadily, sticking to my design sense and doing a lot of trunk shows all over India and abroad, I was able to build a market for myself. I am proud to say that most of my buyers have come back to buy from me again and again.
Describe your work in a sentence.
Jewellery is about memories, emotions, messages and much, much more!
Can you tell us a bit about your exhibition that's taking place tomorrow?
Dubai has always been my favourite destination for jewellery shows. My fine jewellery collection will be open for viewing tomorrow (February 23) in Jumeirah by prior appointment only.
What is your favourite thing about your job?
I love to hear my clients talk about the compliments they receive when they wear a piece bought from me, and I love it when they tell me how that piece of jewellery makes them feel. If someone tells me how they wore a piece for a party the other day, and how everyone wanted to know where they bought it from, that is a conversation that always makes my day.
How do you typically start your workday?
I start my day by meditating for a few minutes. My mornings are always sacrosanct; it's my time for myself, the quietest time of my day. A little yoga, some breathing exercises and a brisk morning walk enable me to get a head start and be my most productive self for the rest of the day.
What advice would you give your younger self, if you could?
To take a little more risk, like opening a chain of jewellery shops. But that's all in hindsight now. I am very happy with what I have achieved so far.
How do you maintain work:life balance?
I balance my work with regular travel - nothing like a good short vacation to keep the batteries charged! I like to attend musical performances and cultural events. I also like to spend a lot of time with my family and friends.
Any advice for youngsters just getting into the professional arena?
Follow your passion, be prepared to work hard, and don't let anyone limit your dreams. Remember, fear does not prevent death - it only prevents life.
What is your greatest dream, professionally?
I have no dreams - I believe in today!
