Let's face it - customers today are pickier about what they're putting into their bodies. That isn't to say we want bland, boring 'healthy' bites. If anything, we want to have our proverbial gluten-free vegan cake and eat it too.
Enter Origins, an all-day eatery in the newly-opened Vida Emirates Hills. It's 'not a preachy place' but, rest assured, the health-conscious can order off the menu without a second thought. Even the interiors give out a wholesome vibe. Whether it's the floor-to-ceiling windows through which one gets an excellent view of the hotel's infinity pool, or the tasteful placement of indoor plants, we felt very welcome.
The menu is international. I savoured a crispy roast duck salad - just five ingredients and a dressing, simple yet delicious - while my plus one tucked into a creamy pea soup. The Buffalo Mozzarella, served with pesto sauce, was another winner. Corn-fed Baby Chicken, lightly seasoned, made for a satisfying main, as did the Baked Butternut Squash, served on a bed of barley. A deliciously creamy chocolate tart with a generous sprinkling of pistachios - ended things on a sweet, and guilt-free, note.
TASTE
Origins doesn't try too hard, but one bite into a dish, and you just know you're eating quality food and ingredients. Dishes like the chicken, butternut squash and pea soup were simple yet packed with flavour. We did find some dishes, like the chicken broth, a tad bland.
AMBIENCE
The space is modern and welcoming, with shades of grey and green, and raw, smooth wood. Factor in the greenery in the form of indoor plants, and you have a great place to lounge about on a leisurely Friday morning, over a cup of coffee, or full meal.
SERVICE
Our servers were extremely warm and welcoming, always happy to make recommendations or jokes, and didn't hover. Dishes arrived on the table pretty fast too. There were no standouts in this department, but no complaints either.
PRESENTATION
The food is wholesome and hearty and this translates in its presentation as well. Sure, you don't have fine-dining level presentation, but with the heavy white plates, dishes are pretty, fuss-free and definitely Instagram-worthy. We approve.
VALUE FOR MONEY
The most expensive item on their breakfast menu is just Dh65 (for smoked beef sausage, hash browns, baked beans and fried eggs). Mains average at Dh100 and dessert at Dh50... Not bad considering this is also healthy, fresh and tasty.
