Spa Review: Luban Spa

Frankincense is, and always has been, a big part of the Middle Eastern culture. It is widely used in perfumes and cosmetics and the oil derived from it (through a steam distillation process) is believed to have numerous benefits for the skin. So when I heard about Luban Spa (translates to Frankincense in Arabic), a female-only UAE spa that offers a variety of pampering treatments with this oil, I was impressed... and curious.
The place lives up to the hype alright. Located in Jumeirah, the two-storied spa is dimly lit and beautiful, with plenty of candles, a separate relaxation area and changing room, Arabic motifs and music. This is a place you'll want to linger in, and luckily, it offers more than just spa treatments: there's everything from waxing to pedicures and manicures - at nominal rates.
My friendly therapist Zainab explained the many benefits of frankincense oils and serums - anti-ageing properties and stress reduction - as she led me to my quiet treatment room. I had opted for a Luban Bespoke body massage, that combines hot stone therapy and the luxurious frankincense oil, and after 90 minutes, my body felt good as new and my skin silky soft. It's the real Arab experience - and it's hard not to love.
Therapy time
An essential oil burner was placed below my head - which was very fortunate since Zainab started my treatment by asking me to breathe in seven times... and the delicate scent of frankincense wafted in. What followed was a massage with plenty of frankincense oil, as well as hot stones that were pressed on my back and neck before settling on my palms. I liked how Zainab increased the pressure gently when she realised how stiff my back was. My face was cleaned and massaged with the use of pressure points, and the treatment ended with a head massage - everything I needed to fall into a state of bliss.
What we loved...
Everything about it has a distinct Arabic feel, from the use of
frankincense, to the slow but relaxing music to the little nibbles they offer you after the treatment (date balls with sesame seeds). Anyone looking for that traditional Arab experience will surely enjoy the place.
What we didn't...
Most luxury spas like Luban are associated with a hotel and are, therefore, slightly easier to access. Finding Luban Spa, which is in a villa tucked in Jumeirah, might be a bit difficult. If you do find this little gem, do go right in - you won't regret it.
