Spa Review: Samana Spa, Melia Desert Palm

Being directionally-challenged doesn't help matters when travelling from one end of town to the other. Having lost and found my way again, and then once again, while en route to Al Awir Road from Discovery Gardens, I finally reached the premises of Melia Desert Palm a good 30 minutes later than my scheduled time. Once there, the views were enticing. To eyes and ears that are too familiar with the Friday buzz in Dubai, the premises seemed too quiet, and hence attractive. Add to it the allure of fountains, small streams of water running right through the entrance and minimalist interiors, and I was assured of having a nice time at the hotel's Samana Spa.
I was here to try the Girl's Day Out Package that offers a rather elaborate pampering session, comprising a 60-minute massage, afternoon tea, access to the infinity pool and other facilities. As someone who neither knows how to swim nor drinks tea, I had to check off at least two of those options, hoping the massage itself would make up for it.
Looking at the stiffness in my body, my therapist Annys pointed out that a medium pressure massage would help relax the tired muscles. Given my low threshold for pain, I wasn't completely convinced, but decided to give it a chance nonetheless.
Therapy time
A footbath later, Annys recommends I opt for the relaxation oil - that smells of lavender - for the massage. She begins with my legs and applies pressure that initially feels painful but then familiar. Identifying, two specific areas where muscles have stiffened, she uses a range of movements - from stroking to kneading - to treat those. Her efforts are necessary, she tells me, as the stiffness can lead to persistent backpain in future. She also treats the swelling in my foot with great care, touching some key points to ensure a smoother blood circulation. End result: I feel a little more alive than I did one hour ago.

What we loved...
I have tried many relaxation oils, but the one at Samana Spa could transport you to a lavender farm. Despite being 30 minutes late, the staff was accommodating and ensured the quality wasn't compromised. Additional points for the treatment room that was fairly spacious.
What we didn't...
Distance can be an issue, if you're living far away. But it's useful to remember that the spa is part of a property that is meant to be a relaxation retreat. So, once you come to terms with the distance, everything else seems like a cakewalk. And oh, it'd be nice if the rooms were more dimly lit.
