Three people sleeping on a pavement in a lower-middle class locality in Ahmedabad were killed and their five relatives were injured when a 13-year-old-boy lost control of his car and ran over them in the wee hours of Wednesday.

The boy, who was driving his Hyundai i20 at a speed 120km an hour, sped away after the accident but was caught within an hour by the police from his home nearby.

Though his car was badly damaged with tyres flattened, the terrified ninth grader, who was accompanied by his two classmates on his joyride, sped away to his home 500 metres away.

An eye-witness, who had noted down the registration number of the car, alerted the police who nabbed him within an hour from his home.

Local residents told the cops that the boy was notorious in the neighbourhood for rash driving and his parents had been informed about it many times.

The parents told the police that they did not know their son had taken the car out in the middle of the night.

The police told Khaleej Times that the boy’s father was a history-sheeter and an accused in cases of theft and loot, and action would be taken against him, too, under the Motor Vehicle’s Act if found negligent.

The victims, all Muslims, belonged to one family.
