At least 15 persons of a marriage party, including three children, died on the spot and 18 others were injured in a head on collision between a private bus and a mini truck in the early hours of Saturday near Kandukur in the coastal Andhra district of Prakasam.
Police sources said the marriage party was travelling in the mini truck to Malakonda from Kandukur when the mishap occurred. There were no passengers in the bus when the accident took place. Such was the impact of the collision that both the vehicles jack-knifed upwards, overturned and then rolled into a near by stream.
The bus caught fire immediately on impact and though it also fell in the stream, it was gutted before fire tenders could put it out as the flames spread rapidly, police said, adding that about 40 persons were travelling in the mini truck.
The injured persons were initially admitted to Kandukur hospital, but 12 of them were shifted to the Rajiv Gandhi Institute of Medical Sciences in Ongole for better treatment, Inspector of Police, Kandukur, said. The death toll may rise since some of the injured were stated to be in critical condition.
