Hyderabad: The Telangana government has claimed that only 409 farmers' had committed suicide in the past one year even as three debt-ridden cotton farmers in the new State allegedly took their lives in the past couple of days.
Refuting opposition allegations that 1000-plus farmers' had committed suicide since the formation of the State, Agriculture Minister Pocharam Srinivas Reddy said 409 farmers committed suicide between June 2, 2014, and June 24 this year despite the fact that the Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) government had introduced several welfare measures for the farm sector.
Telangana Pradesh Congress Committee president N Uttam Kumar Reddy and Telugu Desam politburo member Ravula Chandrasekhar Reddy, however, dismissed the government figures, stating that it did not reflect reality.
While the Congress has alleged 1,300 farmers' suicides, the TDP put the figure at 1,182 till date and has promised to come out with proof.
