Details about her funeral are not known. She wanted her body to be laid rest in Kerala. Chief Minister Oommen Chandy, Cinema Minister K B Ganesh Kumar and her colleagues in the film industry are holding discussions with her family members for bringing her body to the State.

Born in 1938, Sukumari started her acting career from the age of 10 and has donned more than 2500 films in Malayalam, Tamil, Kannada and Telugu. She has donned the role of mother, grandmother, aunt and many others in her career spanning more than six decades.

She was active in both television and cinema until she was hospitalised with the accidental fire. In 2003, she was awarded the Padma Shri by the Government of India for her contributions towards the arts. She won the National Film Award for Best Supporting Actress for her role in Namma Gramam (2010). She won the Kerala State Film Awards second best actress in 1974, 1979, 1983 and 1985. She also won the Filmfare lifetime achievement award in 2005.

Sukumari was born in Nagercoil, Travancore in 1938. Sukumari is a first cousin of the Travancore Sisters, Lalitha, Padmini and Ragini (their mothers are sisters). She learned dance with the sisters and mastered dance forms like Keralanadanam, Kathakali and Bharathanatyam.

Sukumari was married to director A. Bhimsingh, who died when she was barely 30. Her lone son Suresh is also an actor.

The sudden death has come as a big shock to the film industry and her fans. Super star Mohanlal said Sukumari was more than an actor to him. Leading actor Dileep said she was like a mother to him. He said she had treated everybody in the industry as her children. Overseas Indians Affairs Minister Vayalar Ravi said Sukumari was an accomplished artist and true human. — news@khaleejtimes.com
