Islamabad: Former president and Pakistan People's Party (PPP) co-chairman Asif Ali Zardari alleged on Monday that Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif is repeating politics of victimisation which was prevalent in the 1990s.
"Steps being taken by the government clearly indicate they are trying to divide the nation in an attempt to save their natural allies, Taleban and the terrorists, and weaken the war on terror," Zardari said while referring to anti-corruption arrests in Karachi including Zardari's close confidante Dr Asim Hussain.
In a statement issued from London, Zardari said at a time when the country's innocent citizens are being killed by indiscriminate shelling in border villages by the enemy and Pakistan Army is fighting a decisive war against terrorists, Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif instead of challenging the real enemy is targeting the PPP and other political opponents. Zardari said the PPP stands fully with the army in the ongoing war against terrorism.
The former president warned that politics of revenge should immediately be stopped otherwise it will have disastrous consequences.
Zardari said the PPP accepted the 2013 general elections despite being rigged by the Returning Officers. "The decisions recently announced by election tribunals prove that the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz received outside help.
Zardari said that in Punjab a video surfaced in which a provincial minister Rana Mashhood is seen receiving money on behalf of Mian brothers, but he has not been arrested.
He said that actions being taken by the federal agencies in Sindh are clear violation of the constitution. "If they want to conduct fair accountability, they should first take action against a federal minister who had confessed before a magistrate that he has been involved in money-laundering for the Sharif brothers. Only then we will know how clean the followers of the N-league are."
