A coconut left inside a coffin in Bolton, Manchester, exploded during the funeral and caused fear among the crematorium staff. The Bolton Council has now urged mourners to not slip items in with their deceased relatives as this might turn out to be dangerous in case of any untoward incident like explosion or fire.
Donna Ball, assistant director of community services, said that recently there is a rise in relatives sneaking in mobile phones in the coffins. "We have seen a rise in things like e-cigarettes, and mobile phones. Mobile phones, in particular, are a real issue for us," Daily Mail quoted Ball as saying in BBC.
This is not the first time that the crematorium staff has faced these issues. One of the staff who is in the occupation since 17 years, said that people request to place inside the coffins harmful items like mobile phones, e-cigarettes, TV remotes, lighters and alcohol bottles.
While Ball said, "The funeral director will pick such items up but sometimes things are slid inside peoples' pockets and they are just not picked up during the process, then when they go through the cremation process a hell of an explosion can sometimes occur."
Louise Walch-Grognet, of Fred Hamer Funeral Services, in Bolton, said that people secretly put some things inside the coffins and do not think about safety of the crematorium staff.
Quoting an incident, Ball said that once a relative of a deceased had asked if a spare set of underwear could be placed inside the coffin.
