The opposition Congress in Telangana on Friday warned the state government that it would have to face criminal proceedings if it did not take measures to check suicides by distressed farmers in the state.
Leader of the Opposition in Telangana State Legislative Council Mohammed Ali Shabbir, accusing the Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) government of not taking any steps to handle a possible agrarian crisis in view of failed monsoon, said hopes of a good monsoon and crop have almost vanished and the total sowing area in the state had come down by about 35 per cent for the third consecutive season.
"The crop failure in the last two seasons was followed by a spate of suicides by farmers. In order to avoid a similar situation this season, the state government must come forward and give an assurance to farmers that it would help them in this time of distress, failing which the Congress party will register FIRs against the TRS government if any farmer commits suicide anywhere in the state," he said.
"We will lodge complaints under criminal negligence, abetment to suicide and other relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code if any farmer commits suicide for farm-related reasons. By remaining insensitive to the needs of the farming community, the TRS government has been resorting to mass murder of farmers in the state," Shabbir Ali said.
Shabbir Ali said while chief minister K Chandrasekhar Rao wants to spend Rs250 billion on his "new publicity stunt" called "Grama Jyothi", he had no money to clear the dues of crop loan waiver scheme.
"KCR has divided the payment towards crop loan waiver scheme into four instalments thus depriving the farmers of fresh loans for four years. He has not extended any relief to the families of those who committed suicide, has not declared 'drought hit' mandals nor has he managed to get any assistance from the Centre," the Congress leader said, adding that KCR was directly responsible for the suicide of 1,039 farmers since the formation of Telangana state.
