The government on Monday will start dismantling the sprawling 'D' Chowk located in the most sensitive Red Zone for holding parades on national days, to prevent its misuse by political and religious parties which staged sit-ins at the place recently.
Speaking at a Press conference on Saturday, Interior Minister Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan said effective hurdles would be erected to ensure a ban on staging sit-ins or any other activities that paralyze the capital as was witnessed during the recent agitation by religious parties and in 2014 for 126 days by opposition leader Imran Khan.
He said four or five religious leaders had used innocent people in the name of safeguarding honour of the Holy Prophet (Peace be upon him) to serve their political designs. Though there was consensus that their demands were invalid, the government acted with patience and tact to avoid possible casualties in any operation and ensure peaceful dispersal of the crowd protesting against execution of assassin of Punjab governor Salman Taseer.
"A few individuals were making wrong use of the notion of the finality of Prophet Muhammad (Peace be upon him) for personal and political gain, and it was decided that the area had to be cleared promptly," said the interior minister.
He slammed PPP leaders for exploiting Musharraf's departure in the wake of the Supreme Court decision, saying contrary to the present government, the PPP did nothing to register sedition case or pursue murder case of its own leader Benazir Bhutto against the former ruler.
