A doctor travelling on board a flight from India to United States helped a woman deliver her baby after she went into labour mid-air.
Dr Sij Hemal, the second-year urology resident at Cleveland Clinic's Glickman Urological and Kidney Institute, started in New Delhi, stopped in Paris and was headed to New York, where he had to take a connecting flight to Cleveland - his final destination, a CNN report said.
He was trying to catch on with some sleep on the Air France flight, when a member of the crew came to him, looking for doctors on the flight. The 27-year-old doctor swung into action and ensured that the pregnant lady, 41-year-old Toyin Ogundipe, gave birth to a healthy baby. The entire crew provided him all the support needed: they shifted the woman to the first class, which had more space and fewer passengers.
The crew and the doctor took the right decision to deliver the baby on board as the emergency landing would have required a two-hour diversion to a US military base in the Azores Islands. The JFK International Airport was four hours away and they couldn't have waited for it, either.
Even though Hemal is an urologist, his training at Wake Forest School of Medicine, helped him. He had delivered seven babies before this.
"I was relaxed because I knew I was in safe hands," Ogundipe was quoted as saying in the report. "They did everything a doctor or midwife would have done if I was in the labour room in the hospital. Even better, if you ask me."
After Ogundipe gave birth, Hemal heaved a sigh of relief.
"Honestly, it was something from God," the doctor said. "A lot of things could have gone wrong. But we made the best with what we had."
After the landing, the airport officials helped him catch his connecting flight on time. And he also got a whole bottle of champagne as well as a travel voucher from Air France - for his exceptional gesture.
