Ahmedabad — Even as results of the Class XII examinations crucial for admission to medical colleges are expected to be declared soon, the Gujarat government is all set to make it easier for Gujarati students aspiring to turn doctors.
The Anandi Patel administration has accepted the recommendation of a state-appointed committee that boys and girls seeking admission to medical, dental and paramedical courses on the 15 per cent NRI quota be asked to produce a domicile certificate to prove that the applicant is a resident of Gujarat.
In other words, Gujarati students who were hitherto being deprived of admission to some 400 NRI quota seats from among the 3170 medical seats in the state will get preference if they produce the domicile certificate.
Accordingly, after NRI students and NRI-sponsored students with domicile certificates are admitted to a medical college, the remaining vacant seats, if any, will be filled by NRI-sponsored students from other states who also will have to submit their own domicile proofs.
Only last week, the Medical Council of India (MCI) has granted permission for two new government-run medical colleges, one each in Himmatnagar and Junagadh in Gujarat. The two new colleges will have a capacity to admit 150 students each.
