Outgoing housing minister Ibrahim Mahlab was appointed as Egypt’s new prime minister on Tuesday after the resignation of the cabinet installed by the military following last year’s overthrow of Mohammed Mursi.

Mahlab, a former member of deposed president Hosni Mubarak’s National Democratic Party, told reporters he had been tasked by interim president Adly Mansour with forming the new government ahead of presidential polls due to be held this spring.

Speaking at a news conference, Mahlab said his government would work to “crush terrorism” and that he hoped to form his new cabinet quickly.

“We will work together to restore security and safety to Egypt and crush terrorism in all corners of the country,” he said after Adly Mansour asked him to form the new government.
