Ahmed Zewail, the Egyptian-American scientist who won the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 1999 has died. He was 70.
Zewail, who won the prize for his work in femtochemistry, was the first Arab scientist to win the coveted prize in a scientific field.
While it's not immediately clear how Zewail died, social media is flooded with comments paying tribute to the scientist.
Zewail was born on February 26, 1946 in Damanhour, Egypt, and was raised in Desouk. He received a Bachelor of Science and Master of Science degrees in chemistry from Alexandria University, Egypt before moving to the United States to complete his PhD at the University of Pennsylvania supervised by Robin M. Hochstrasser.
