The controversial Aranmula airport project, the clearances of which were cancelled by various agencies, is back in the reckoning with the Federal Ministry of Environment and Forest (MoEF) giving its nod to the promoters to go ahead with a fresh environment impact assessment (EIA).
The Chennai-based KGS Group, which has mooted the greenfield airport at Aranmula in Pathanamthitta district of Kerala, was permitted to carry out the EIA by the Expert Appraisal Committee for Infrastructure Projects under the MoEF subject to certain conditions on a fresh proposal made by the company.
The panel has asked the promoters to revise the project in a way it will not obstruct the natural flow of a stream passing through the project site and hold a referendum among local people, who have been opposing the project on environmental grounds.
