Aiming to achieve 100 per cent literacy, the six Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries have decided to implement a uniform admission process in universities and centers of higher education.
This was decided during an extraordinary meeting of the committee on deans of admission and registration at the GCC Secretariat in Riyadh last week, Arab News reported.
The arrangement is being made to provide equal opportunities to the GCC students who wish to enter universities and seats of higher education in the region, a statement released by the GCC Secretariat said.
A joint educational process had begun with a meeting of the committee of the directors and presidents of universities and higher education institutions at the GCC Secretariat General in March 1986, it said.
The meeting then discussed topics of special importance to the process of cooperation and integration among the GCC states.
The topics included resolution of the Supreme Council on public education and higher education, objectives, policies and development plans, priorities for the joint action for higher education, equal treatment of students in terms of admission and treatment, coordination of efforts in the field of research and promoting integration and students' joint activities and meetings.
GCC is a political and economic alliance of six Middle Eastern countries that include - Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, the United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Bahrain, and Oman.
