The Grand Mufti’s statement comes amid fears that the country’s image of being peaceful and stable could be dented by continuing unrest in the country. Sporadic incidents of protests are threatening the functioning of the private sector and could have an impact on the tourism sector as well.
In his statement, Khalili asked the people to exercise patience and keep the public interest over personal interests because reform is an ongoing process needing elaborate studies and plans and that cannot be achieved in a single day.
Khalili said that reforms and changes can be realised only by piety and sincere adherence to the teachings of the Holy Quran and the Sunna of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). The people should stick to justice in all affairs of social, political and economic life, as well as apply the principles of Shura and the responsibilities entrusted to individuals.
Meanwhile, the unrest in Oman continued in various places affecting various businesses. A prominent private business group, which also holds a major stake in a local bank, has been witnessing protests by its staff.
The heavy truck drivers’ fraternity has also gone on strike asking for various demands to be met while employees of Crowne Plaza Hotel are also picketing near the entrance to the hotel, reportedly causing inconvenience to guests.
In another development reported by the local media, around 7,000 people have signed a memorandum seeking the trial of ousted ministers and submitted it to the Attorney General of Oman Hussain bin Ali Al Hilly.
Sit-ins by protesters, who have erected tents, in front of the Males Ashore headquarters in Muscat demanding political and social reforms as well as purging public corruption, are continuing.
