When rumours that Imran Khan had married for the third time flew thick and fast, his party Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) decided to scotch them all. It came out with a clarification that "Mr Khan proposed marriage to Ms Bushra Maneka; but Ms Maneka asked for time to make a final decision after consulting her family, including her children."
Earlier, rumours were rife that the cricketer-turned-politician had tied the knot with Maneka, his spiritual mentor whom he has known for a couple of years.
These did the rounds following a report carried in The News, a Pakistan-based newspaper, which said that the PTI chairman had married Maneka secretly on the New Year day in Lahore. Mufti Saeed, a PTI core committee member, performed the wedlock, said the report.
The report met with sharp criticism from Khan's party. While rubbishing the rumours, the PTI notification said: "It is indeed sad to see this extremely private and sensitive matter be made the subject of erroneous story leading to all manner of public conjecture."
It (the report) involves "a very private lady who is not in public life. This has put burden especially on the children of Maneka and Khan who have had to learn of such a private and intimate issue from media", a PTI spokesperson said.
The PTI statement added: "If and when the proposal is accepted by Ms Maneka for the marriage, Mr Khan will announce it publicly in the proper manner."
The 40-something Maneka is a faith healer in Pakpattan. She was earlier married to Khawar Farid Maneka, a senior customs official in Islamabad. If she marries Imran, it would be her second marriage.
For Khan, it would be his third. His first wife was Jemima Khan. The couple married on May 16, 1995 and stayed together for nine years, before divorcing. Khan married Reham Khan, a TV anchor, after this. They parted ways within 10 months.
