A Twitter thread asking people to share their "most controversial food opinion" took off on a funny note over the weekend. But the thread soon turned into a war of words after a Twitter user and US academic, Tom Nichols, tweeted his dislike for Indian food.
Nichols must not have anticipated angry reactions when he responded to the tweet first posted by a Miami University student and Twitter user Jon Becker. Becker's tweet read: 'Please quote tweet this with your most controversial food opinion, I love controversial food opinions'.
So, just like thousand others, Nichols also responded to the tweet and gave his opinion. 'Indian food is terrible and we pretend it isn't', read his tweet, garnering a flood of comments, many from angry Indian food-lovers, reported NDTV.
Since being posted on Sunday, Tom Nichols' tweet has collected over 12,000 'likes' and a string of comments trolling him. One Twitter user responded to Nichols and wrote: 'Imagine going through life being this flavorless', while another person wrote: 'Unless you've literally tried every single type of Indian cuisine there is no way you can make such a general statement'.
Even 'Top Chef' host, author and model Padma Lakshmi could not help but comment a sharp retort. She wrote: 'Do you not have taste buds'? However, Nichols seemed unfazed by the criticism on Twitter and defended his stand in follow-up tweets. He further tweeted with raillery: 'The only two foods that I don't eat: Ethiopian and Indian. I'm pretty open about the rest of it'.
